Over a dozen Auburn homes evacuated after high levels of methane gas detected

AUBURN - At least 16 homes in one Auburn neighborhood were evacuated overnight due to high levels of methane gas.

Puget Sound Energy crews report that they were doing normal gas checks in the area when they came across high levels of methane in that neighborhood.

This happened on the 31000 block of 133rd Ave. SE, near Green River Community College and SR 18.

Families were bused out of the area while crews worked to determine where the gas came from. Methane is potentially explosive when it reaches high levels and has a source of ignition.

No source for the methane was discovered and there were no illnesses reported.

Residents have since been allowed back into their homes.
