Woman arrested for DUI after train crash in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A woman faces DUI charges after her car and a train collided Sunday morning in Bellingham.

Two witnesses told police the woman's yellow 2005 Toyota Scion was sitting on the tracks when the train approached about 3:15 a.m.

After multiple horn warnings, the driver moved the car slightly forward which actually squared it up to the front of the train and hit the driver's side of the car, Lt. Bob Vander Yacht said.

The driver 31-year-old Sandra Mendez Rivera was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph's Medical Center for minor injuries.

First responders and police on the scene noted that a strong odor of alcohol was present in Rivera's car.

The investigation is ongoing.
