HERMITAGE, Tenn. – A 12-year-old has been released from the hospital on Sunday night after being shot by a 2-year-old relative earlier in the day, WSMV reported.

The shooting happened Sunday morning in Hermitage on Blue Hills Drive.

This shooting is the 26th unintentional shooting in Tennessee this year involving a child.

“I hear these kids just screaming bloody murder, ” said Robert Dubose, who lives next door.

He said there were six kids in the driveway when the shooting happened.

“Then I realized there was a gentleman about 12 years old sitting on the ground holding his leg screaming,” said Dubose.

Police said the gun owner was visiting her sister and had a loaded gun in the side compartment of her car.

Somehow the 2-year-old who lived at the house got a hold of the pistol and shot the 12-year-old.

Police said the gun owner was legally allowed to have her firearm in her car. She does not, however, have a carry permit.

No charges have been filed in this case.
