'I'm just really proud.' Coach Pete Carroll speaks about players planned ‘demonstration of unity’

SEATTLE - There's no official word on what Seahawks players will be doing in their planned "demonstration of unity," but one thing is for sure  -- head coach Pete Carroll is very proud of them. During a press conference Friday, Carroll repeatedly said he was "proud of the process" and how his players reached their decision.

"They are going to be very thoughtful, very respectful honoring that which should be recognized," Carroll said. Adding, that his players have a conscious. "They really want to do the right thing and be right."

Carroll told reporters the decision to participate was personal and one that each player had to make. Carroll said he advised them and acted as a mentor but did not tell his players what to do, adding that the experience has been tremendous.

"What has been remarkable is the interaction and the care they have extended to one another with different opinions," Carroll said. "This has just been a tremendous process. I think this is ongoing. They are going to continue to grow. They want to do very meaningful things."

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin tweeted Thursday that the team “will honor the country and flag” in a “demonstration of unity” prior to Sunday’s season opener against Miami. When approached in the locker room by reporters, Baldwin declined to elaborate further saying, “you’ll see on Sunday.”

The "demonstration of unity" was hatched out earlier this week when some Seahawks players stated that they might consider sitting during the national anthem to bring attention to police brutality and racial discrimination.

Sunday's game at CenturyLink Field is on the 15th anniversary of September, 11.

The mayor of DuPont has decided to cancel the 3rd annual Seahawks rally scheduled for Sept. 10 after learning of the demonstration.
