Devastating mobile home fire near Bonney Lake leaves 1 dead, 2 seriously injured

BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- One person died and two others with life-threatening injuries were rushed to the hospital Thursday after a mobile home fire in Prairie Ridge, a community just south of the city of  Bonney Lake, East Pierce Fire and Rescue said.

Firefighters were called to the scene on the 14700 block of Prairie Ridge Drive East at 3:57 p.m., the fire department said.  When they arrived, they found a  mobile home fully involved. Two people had been able to get out of the house on their own, the department said, and they reported that one person was still trapped inside.

Firefighters went into the burning home and pulled the remaining victim out, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the department said. The other two occupants were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries, the department said.

More than two dozen firefighters, including a mutual aid engine from Orting Valley Fire and Rescue, battled the blaze. The home is a total loss.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions coming from the home during the fire. East Pierce officials say that it was probably ammunition or normal explosions that occur during a house fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by both the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
