Prosthetic leg stolen from boy, 4, at California beach

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. (AP) — A 4-year-old Southern California boy visiting the beach for the first time had his prosthetic leg stolen but hundreds of people have reached out to help him replace it.

Liam Brenes of Rancho Santa Margarita was born without a small bone in his right leg, and it was amputated below the knee.

Liam and his parents went to Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County on Sunday. His custom leg was left on the sand while Liam went to explore tide pools.

When the family returned from the water, the leg was gone.

When word got out, people started offering replacements or donations. An online campaign has raised more than $15,000.

Liam's mother, Amanda McFarland, tells the Orange County Register the outpouring of goodwill has restored her faith.
