Tacoma to decide on plastic bag ban

TACOMA -- Tuesday the Tacoma City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed plastic bag ban.

City leaders are considering joining 15 other Washington cities that don't allow plastic bags and charge shoppers 5 cents for paper bags.  The goal is to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills.

An informal survey from the city earlier this year found out of 2,200 respondents, people showed no clear majority in support of the ban.  About 48 percent of survey respondents support the ban, with 42 percent oppose to the proposal.

If approved, the ban would take effect a full year after the bill is signed into law.
