Montesano man who supported ISIS, bin Laden, pleads guilty to illegal firearm possession

MONTESANO, Wash. – An Army deserter from Montesano who allegedly said he sympathizes with ISIS and called Osama bin Laden a “beautiful man” pleaded guilty Tuesday to illegally possessing machine guns and other firearms.

Daniel Seth Franey, aka Abu Dawuud, faces up to 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced in October.

The federal government began investigating Franey after somebody reported him for expressing a desire to kill member of the U.S. military and law enforcement and trying to buy guns despite being barred from doing so under a protection order.

According to the plea agreement and other records, Franey handled several guns – including fully automatic machine guns – several times last fall while acknowledging he was prohibited from doing so.

An undercover officer taped Franey trying to buy AK-47s, and discussing what he thought were the best targets for attack. The recordings also recorded him repeatedly expressing support for ISIS.
