Firefighters: Flames destroy Olympia warehouse, causing $850,000 in damage

OLYMPIA - Massive flames destroyed a storage warehouse, causing $850,000 in damage early Tuesday morning, according to the Olympia Fire Department.

By the time firefighters arrived around 1 a.m., smoke and flames poured from the building located at 227 Adams St. NE.

First responders could see the fire from the downtown station located blocks from the warehouse. It took Olympia, Lacey, Thurston County, and Tumwater firefighters several hours to put out the flames.

Deputy fire chief Greg Wright said a local fuel company, a small tea wholesaler and a wood shop booth rented out space in the warehouse. He said it was built in the 1920s and at one point was part of a lumber mill.

In total, the fire department estimates $350,000 in damage to the building. An additional $500,000 worth of property inside the warehouse was destroyed.

The warehouse did not have a fire alarm or water sprinklers. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
