Officer-involved shooting sends man to hospital with critical injuries

SEATTLE, Wash. -- What started as a domestic violence call ended in an officer-involved shooting that sent one man to the hospital with critical injuries. It happened on the 1900 block of South Dearborn Street in Seattle’s Central District Sunday afternoon around 1:45.

Seattle Police say they arrived to the area for a report of a suicidal man chasing his partner with a kitchen chopping knife out in the front of their home. They say officers arrived just three minutes later and contacted the victim, and the suspect was no longer there.

While speaking to the victim, police say the suspect returned and confronted the officers, armed with two kitchen knives prompting one officer to shoot and wound the man. They say officers began life saving efforts and called for Seattle Fire medics.

“They were multiple shots; they were just pop, pop, pop like that,” described Tom Williams, who lives near the scene and heard the gunshots.

Neighbors say they know the man shot by police, and they’re in disbelief over the violence.

“Never ever have I heard any types of argument; they were just really nice down to earth neighbors,” said Sonya Hoffman.

Now both neighbors and investigators want to know if the shooting was necessary.

At last check, the suspect is at Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. The officer involved is on paid administrative leave. No officers were reportedly injured in the incident.
