Phoenix, AZ — Phoenix police say officers were forced to open fire on a 70-year-old man who was pointing what looked like a gun at traffic on Thursday night.

It happened just before 5:30 p.m. near 44th Street and Deer Valley, in the Desert Ridge area.

According to police, the suspect was pointing the gun at cars on Deer Valley Road. Officers arrived and said they told him to drop the weapon.

He reportedly moved toward them and they opened fire.

Officers said they found out later the weapon he had was a toy gun.

The man is in serious but stable condition.

No officers were hurt.

Deer Valley is restricted in the area, between Tatum and Deer Valley.
