Remains of Arlington couple found after one of the accused killers pinpoint gravesite

OSO, Wash. -- On Tuesday, detectives discovered the remains of two people they believe are those of slain Arlington couple Monique Patenaude and Patrick Shunn.

Detectives have found the remains of "two people, one male, one female, in the Oso area,” said Shari Ireton, communications director for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

After more than a month of searching for Patrick and Monique, detectives say it was a tip from one of the accused killers that finally pinpointed the couple’s remains.  “Information we received from Tony Reed booked into our jail earlier this month did help detectives,” Ireton said.

After being on the run for weeks, making it all the way to Mexico, Tony Reed turned himself in and on Tuesday Reed faced a judge.

“Not guilty,” Reed said.

After helping detectives locate the bodies, Tony pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges in the deaths of Patrick and Monique.  His older fugitive brother, John Reed, is also accused of killing the two.

A man who would only identify himself as Daniel showed up to court on Tuesday and said he knows the Reed brothers. The man says he cannot speak for John Reed but he believes Tony is innocent.

“I know he tells the truth,” Daniel said.

Prosecutors say John Reed had been angry with Patrick and Monique over a property dispute. Monique had complained to Snohomish County authorities that John, her former neighbor, was back on the property squatting.

Prosecutors say the brothers killed the couple at their Arlington home, burying the couple’s body miles away in the woods in Oso. Their remains were found in the same area where detectives found the couple's Land Rover and Jeep in April.

The only thing now left to find is John Reed; investigators say Tony has yet to reveal where his brother is hiding.

“We haven`t had that conversation,” said Craig Matheson, of  the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors would not say whether they would  lower Tony Reed's charges for his cooperation.
