Arlington community responds to recovery of bodies of slain husband, wife

EVERETT, Wash. -- The bodies believed to be Patrick Shunn and Monique Patenaude are now with the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

Two brothers, John and Tony Reed, are charged with the murders, which occurred sometime around April 11 at or near the couple's Arlington home. Tony Reed turned himself in last week, but John Reed remains on the run and is believed to be in Mexico.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office confirms Tony Reed helped pinpoint the exact location of the bodies.

Friends and family hoped with Tony Reed in custody, it would only be a matter of time before detectives found Shunn and Patenaude. They said recovering their bodies brings healing to them and to the community.

As they have for the last month, searchers left the site near Shunn and Patenaude’s home Tuesday afternoon, except this time they had who they were looking for.

Margaret Hedlund had waited weeks for any word of what happened to her close friends.

“We just needed to know,” said Hedlund. “We knew they were gone. I think everybody can move forward now and just have a sense of relief.”

Those who live nearby say they’ve been waiting, too.

“I hope justice -- that they’ll find justice for the family,” said Kate Cano, who lives on the street where search teams have been coming and going since mid-April.

“It’s been sad,” said Cano. “We’ve all talked about it. Everyday it’s been on our mind, in our thoughts, hoping that they’d find the bodies.”

Now detectives turn their attention to finding John Reed, who’s still on the run. A man they say has the answers investigators and family want.

Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies say they will also talk with Tony about where they can find his big brother. Tony turned himself in to police at the Mexico-California border last week.
