Oregon girl drowns off Washington coast

OCEAN PARK, Wash - A 12-year-old girl from Warrenton, Oregon fatally drowned off Klipsan Beach in Ocean Park, Washington.

Pacific County Sheriff Scott Johnson says they received the first call at 7 p.m..

Another child who was with the girl told a stranger that they couldn't see her friend anymore.

Rescue teams responded and a helicopter was able to spot the child in the water about a quarter of a mile from where they believe she went in.

They were able to pull the girl from the water, but she was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Due to heavy winds in the area, Sheriff Johnson says the waves were bigger than normal.

Deputies believe that adults may have been further down the beach or in a home nearby.

It is not believed the girl was wearing a life jacket.
