Fiery meteor caught on video streaking across northeastern U.S. sky

PORTLAND, Maine -- A meteor was caught on video by police just after midnight Tuesday in the northeastern United States.

Police posted dashcam video from a patrol car that was facing the direction of the meteor around 12:50 a.m.

A bright light can be seen streaking across the sky, lasting only for a few seconds before fading.

"You never know what you are going to see on duty," officers wrote on the Portland, Maine Police Department Facebook page.

According to the Boston Globe, the American Meteorological Society received more than 160 reports from witnesses across the region.

The fireball was seen in Maine, but also as far away as Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario and Quebec.

“Very loud rumbling like thunder that shook my whole house,” wrote Wendy C., of Andover, Maine.
