CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri-- First responders saved an unborn child's life after her mother died in a car accident on the way to the hospital.

Sarah Iler died and her husband was badly injured after a tanker slammed into another car, sending it straight into their red Chevrolet Blazer Wednesday morning. The couple were on their way to the hospital so Iler could give birth, according to the Southeast Missourian.

Emergency crews performed an emergency C-section and performed CPR on the child, saving the little girl's life.

Paramedics rushed the girl, who was named Maddyson, to the hospital in critical condition, but according to a Go Fund Me page, she is now doing better.

"Maddyson is breathing on her own, has opened her eyes, has squeezed the nurses fingers, and my mom (her grandma) got to hear her cry today . . . there is still a possibility of long term damage to her brain and lungs but we just have to keep praying and waiting . . . my thanks goes out to everyone for their selfless acts in this terrible time of tragedy and we greatly appreciate the love and support and all the prayers."

The Go Fund Me page also says that Iler was extremely excited to become a mother for the first time. She's being remembered as a "great friend, fun loving aunt, and a crazy cousin" and "the BEST sister you could ask for."

The baby's father is reportedly recovering from his injuries.
