Q: Do big dogs really help deter burglars from breaking into homes? — Lori

A: Well, Lori, it’s a great question and I will answer the question this way: When we talk to crime prevention officers or police officers who deal with people who’ve been  arrested or put in jail for things like burglary we ask them, ‘What kinds of things detour you, or what things didn’t you like when you were out there committing these crimes?’ They generally say that they really don’t like two things:  Nosy neighbors and large dogs. So, it’s not going to guarantee that a person’s home isn’t going to be burglarized or they won’t be victimized, but there’s nothing better than nosy neighbors, lights and large dogs.” — Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan
