Firefighter shot dead, another critically injured while responding to call in Maryland

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (AP) — Authorities say one of two firefighters shot while making a welfare check in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., has died.

Prince George's County Police Department spokeswoman Julie Parker says 39-year-old John Ulmshneider died Friday night. He was a 13-year veteran of the department.

Firefighters and police had gone to the Temple Hills home after being called by a person concerned the individual inside might be suffering from a medical condition.

When they arrived on the scene, the person inside was unresponsive, so they decided to force entry. The person inside fired several rounds, striking two firefighters and the person who had initially made the call for a welfare check.

Parker says the second firefighter was in critical condition.

The person inside the home was in custody and cooperating with police.
