Elementary school in Edmonds that sustained fire damage will remain closed until April 11

EDMONDS, Wash. (AP) — The Edmonds School District said Thursday that classes will not resume at Madrona Elementary School until Monday, April 11, following spring break, because of a fire that caused more than $250,000 in damage.

No one was injured in last Sunday night's fire, but smoke and water damage has prompted the district to cancel classes at the school all week.

"Students will not have to make up the five days lost due to the fire," the district said.

Firefighters found black smoke billowing from the building just after 8 p.m. Sunday.  Officials say the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes and contained in the faculty room. The adjacent school office and hallway had smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators have determined the fire started in a storage space off the faculty room. They were unable to pinpoint an exact cause, but say there was nothing suspicious about the fire.
