Neighbors help neighbors escape Auburn apartment fire

AUBURN -- Several families are out of their homes after an apartment complex fire early Tuesday morning.

Valley Regional firefighters say the fire started in an upstairs apartment on the 3700 block of D Place Southeast. The flames then moved up into the attic. Neighbors went door-to-door waking people up to get them out safely, according to firefighters.

Diana Montgomery says she was asleep and woke up to someone pounding on her door.

“People were screaming come on get out, get out,” said Montgomery. “I was in a daze.”

Although firefighters contained the flames to one unit, Montgomery’s apartment and several others had smoke and water damage. She’s now unsure if she’ll be able to move back in.

The American Red Cross is helping people find temporary housing.

Firefighters say one person was evaluated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
