Tacoma moved toward plastic bag ban despite public pushback

The Tacoma City Council is moving toward a plastic grocery bag ban despite suggestions that not everyone in the city is on board.

The News Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1Ux6jJX ) that an informal survey of almost 2,200 people showed no clear majority in support of the ban, but council members say they are ready to move forward with an ordinance that would impose one.

About 48 percent of survey respondents support the ban, with 42 percent oppose to the proposal. Both supporters and dissenters used the survey results to bolster their argument.

The survey was commissioned by the city.

If passed, Tacoma would be the 15th city in the state to prohibit stores from handing out disposable bags. The council will again consider the proposal on Tuesday.
