Fire causes more than $250K in damage at Edmonds school; classes canceled for at least 2 days

EDMONDS, Wash. (AP) — A fire has caused more than $250,000 in damage at an Edmonds elementary school. Classes were canceled for Monday  and Tuesday at Madrona K-8 school.

The Edmonds School District said there is also the possibility that classes might be canceled for Wednesday, too.

Snohomish County fire officials say no one was injured in the Sunday evening fire.

Firefighters found black smoke billowing from the building just after 8 p.m. About 40 firefighters from the county, Lynnwood and Shoreline were called in to fight the fire.

Officials say it was extinguished in about 15 minutes and contained in the faculty room. The adjacent school office and hallway had smoke and water damage. Closed doors kept the smoke from entering classrooms.

Fire investigators have determined the fire started in a storage space off the faculty room. They were unable to pinpoint an exact cause, but say there was nothing suspicious about the fire.
