Spanaway convenience store clerk fatally shoots man during apparent robbery attempt

SPANAWAY, Wash. -- A Spanaway convenience store, where a clerk was shot during a robbery last month, was the site of an attempted robbery and shooting on Friday night, according to law enforcement.

A clerk working at the Pacific Quickmart on 166th Street South and Pacific Avenue South shot and killed a 21-year-old man during a robbery attempt shortly before 11 p.m.

The clerk is the husband of the woman shot during last month's robbery, detectives said.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department said he confronted a group drinking alcohol in the parking lot a number of times earlier in the night.

Later, they entered the store and began shoplifting items.

At some point, the clerk pulled out his gun and fatally shot a 21-year-old Jakeel Mason in the store's doorway.

Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Detectives are still interviewing witnesses and surveillance footage.

So far, no arrests have been made.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
