Spirit Airlines starts flights between Sea-Tac and Los Angeles

SEA-TAC, Wash. (AP) — Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has begun serving the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Spirit officials said in a news release the airline began operating flights Thursday night with a trip to Los Angeles.

Spirit will fly twice daily to Los Angeles and will begin flying twice a day to Las Vegas in April. They offer connections to many cities around the country through those destinations.

Officials say Spirit is the first new domestic carrier at Sea-Tac since 2008.

The airline has grown rapidly by luring travelers with cheap base fares that undercut the big airlines.

Spirit charges low base rates, but charges for things travelers are accustomed to getting for free, such as assigned seats, overhead storage and carry-ons.

A round-trip flight between Sea-Tac and LAX will cost you $78 getting there and $48 for the return. But they will charge you $26 each way for a carry-on. And your first checked bag is $21.
