Community holds vigil for victims of Belfair shooting

BELFAIR, Wash. -- The small town of Belfair held a candlelight vigil Monday night for the Mason County mom shot and killed by her husband, along with her two sons and their neighbor.

Lana Carlson’s family stood in the back on the Belfair Community Church, trying to hold back tears as candles were lit for Lana and her two sons.

“The outpouring of support and love and well wishes has just been tremendous and we are eternally grateful,” says Jamie Nocula, Lana’s sister.

They say they're still trying to come to grips with the fact that Lana’s husband, David Campbell, shot her, 16-year-old Quinn, 18-year-old Tory, and their neighbor, 68-year-old Donna Reed. He then killed himself Friday.

Lana’s stepmom says she had no idea the family was having problems.

“There’s no way in any of our minds to figure out why it happened,” says Patty Johnstad.

Many in the community admit they're angry about the loss. Tory's teachers and classmates in the culinary program at Olympic College say the teen had his whole life in front of him.

“He knew what he was going to do, he and his mom were going to open a food truck. He was almost there,” says chef Christina Nys. ”We're all wearing our purple ribbon for domestic violence in honor of Tory. We loved him, you can't find anyone who didn't love him.”

Lana's family says they're now turning all their love to the 12-year-old girl who did survive Friday’s tragedy. They say she is being kept safe, surrounded by family.

“Our focus right now is healing, and just making sure that Lana’s daughter feels nothing but love,” says Nocula.

Q13 News has learned that David Campbell had a lengthy criminal history, including felony charges related to bad checks, stolen property and forgery. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office says they will have an update on the investigation on Tuesday.
