House passes supplemental budget proposal that would include money to reduce homelessness

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The state House of Representatives on Thursday passed the Democratic supplemental budget proposal, part of which seeks money to reduce homelessness and raise the state's portion of the lowest starting salary for public school teachers to $40,000 a year.

The proposal narrowly passed 50-47 on Thursday, and would add about $476 million in spending to the two-year $38 billion budget approved in 2015. It would provide about $318 million from the state's emergency fund to aid homeless people, repair damage from last summer's wildfires and other measures.

The House plan will be part of negotiations for a final supplemental budget with the Senate and Gov. Jay Inslee.

The Senate's proposal, which hasn't been voted on yet, spends $49 million in addition to the two-year budget.
