Fire damages custom garage in Pierce County; RV and vehicles destroyed

PIERCE COUNTY -- A fire destroyed a custom garage, RV, and several vehicles near Sumner early Wednesday morning.

East Pierce firefighters believe the fire started in the RV parked outside and spread to the roof of the garage on a property near the 8900 block of Riverside Drive.

When they arrived, firefighters say there were several classic cars parked inside the garage and the homeowners were trying to open the doors to move stuff out.

“Being down here in the valley the fire was visible for quite a ways. It looked pretty big to a lot of folks and it took a lot of manpower to put this out,” said East Pierce Fire Chief Bud Backer.

Chief Backer says the garage had four bays and an office. He estimates the total damage ranges between $300,000- $500,000.

There were no reports of any injuries.
