Mother of newborn left in restaurant toilet charged

WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) — The mother of a newborn baby found in a toilet at a Subway restaurant in Southern California has been charged with felony child abuse.

Mary Grace Trinidad had been set for arraignment Monday afternoon but it was postponed until Tuesday. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is asking her bail to be set at $100,000.

It's unclear whether the 37-year-old Trinidad has an attorney.

Employees found Trinidad's crying infant Feb. 15 after seeing a bleeding woman leave the sandwich shop and following a trail of blood back to the toilet.

Trinidad, who is homeless, was arrested nearby. Trinidad had also been arrested Jan. 3 for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The baby is expected to survive.
