DSHS employee fired after whistleblower points out he spent hundreds of hours surfing porn, other things

OLYMPIA – The good news is, he can use the internet to search for a new job.

DSHS released a report on Thursday saying it fired an employee after a whistleblower complaint led to the finding that the employee spent hundreds of hours on the clock surfing the internet in the past year.

The investigation found that the employee had spent more than 317 hours using the internet for non-work purposes – including quite a bit of time spent watching porn.

The employee’s defense? He only had about 15 minutes of actual work to do every day.

“He said his job is much like that of a firefighter – most of the time he has nothing to do until there is an emergent situation,” the report read.

The employee’s supervisor disputed that claim.

The report doesn’t give any more details on the nature of the job.

“When examining the subject’s Internet browsing activity, we also found he visited more than 150 websites for sexually explicit films and visited forums used for sharing sexually explicit photographs,” the report reads. “In some instances, shortly after accessing these pages, the subject uploaded and stored sexually explicit films on a file-sharing website.”

The report says the employee didn’t respond to questions about the sexually explicit material.

All in all, the investigation found an average of more than two hours a day spent “viewing news, videos, his personal email account, browsing car parts, and shopping.”
