Mountain snowpack remains above normal across Washington

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The mountain snowpack remains pretty good in Washington state, raising hopes that the state will not have a repeat of the drought and major wildfires of last year.

The February 1 report showed that winter snowpack across the state is 109 percent of normal.

The Skykomish River Basin reported the lowest readings at 68 percent of the 30-year median for February 1. The Okanogan River Basin had the most snow with 146 percent of normal.

The Natural Resource Conservation Service said Monday that most river basins are reporting near to above normal snowpack.

Precipitation remains well above normal, at 129 percent of the average. Only the northeast corner of the state fell below 100 percent of normal.

Last year's drought contributed to the largest wildfire season in Washington history.
