Mom seeks medical expenses for child with cystic fibrosis

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — A jury trial is set to begin in the case of a Montana mother who is suing a nurse practitioner, a physician and their respective clinics because they failed to diagnose her unborn daughter's cystic fibrosis. She says that denied her a chance to have an abortion.

Kerrie Evans of Gardiner is seeking nearly $14.5 million in damages, including $10 million for her daughter's medical and psychological care. Evans says she and her husband had decided to have an abortion if their unborn child had serious abnormalities.

The defendants say Evans received information on genetic testing, but apparently did not read it or request the specific testing.

Court records say the girl, who is almost 6, has a severe form of cystic fibrosis. One medication needed to treat the disease costs up to $300,000 a year.
