Former Seattle SuperSonics guard Earl Watson named coach of Phoenix Suns

PHOENIX (AP) —Former Seattle SuperSonics fan favorite Earl Watson had a big day on Tuesday, when he was named interim head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns fired coach Jeff Hornacek with the team mired in one of the worst stretches in franchise history.

He was replaced - at least for  now - by Watson, who was in his first season as a Suns assistant after a 13-year playing career.

The Sonics drafted Watson in the second round of the 2001 NBA draft. He left for the Grizzlies in 2002, but came back in 2005 and was still with the Sonics when they bolted for Oklahoma City in 2008.

Phoenix has dropped four in a row, 10 of 11 and 19 of 21 to fall to 14-35, tied for fourth-worst in the NBA.
