State senate will vote today on bill to repeal transgender bathroom access rule

OLYMPIA – A state Senate committee on Wednesday was considering a bill that would attempt to repeal transgender bathroom access according to the gender with which a person identifies.

Senate bill SB 6443 aims to force the Washington State Human Rights Commission to repeal a rule guaranteeing access to restrooms, locker rooms and similar facilities that went into yffect at the end of last year.

Fourteen senators sponsored the bill, which the Seattle Times reports was expected to draw loud debate on both sides.

The Times also reports that the House won’t schedule a hearing for similar legislation.

The committee’s vote is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
