Boy, 15, gets probation for shooting 11-year-old brother in face

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Washington ninth-grader who accidentally shot his 11-year-old brother in the face has been placed on probation for a year.

The Everett Herald reports that the 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty to assault and illegal gun possession last month. His brother survived the Nov. 29 shooting.

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Eric Lucas sentenced the teen to 26 days of detention, a year of probation and 72 hours of community service.

Lucas denied a motion from the boy's attorneys asking for a deferred sentence.

The teen told detectives he purchased the revolver and some bullets after he was shot in the chest during a gang-related drive-by shooting in August. He said he kept the gun under his mattress but had been playing with the weapon the day he unintentionally fired it.
