RENTON, Wash. — Wide receiver Doug Baldwin started texting Seahawks legend Steve Largent two years ago.
The Seattle Times reports Baldwin believes you can never know too much about the game and its fundamentals.
One of the last things he sees before leaving home is a poster with the simple reminders “Tip Of The Ball” and “Stay Focused.”
Who gave him that advice? Hall of Famer Steve Largent.
The Times reports he got Largent’s number from a member of the Hawks front office and he reached out asking for advice.
Largent says this is the first time an active Seahawks receiver has contacted him for advice.
“He texted me and asked me some things that I carried through training camp and things that I would work on and stuff like that,” Largent told the paper. “I talked about the release off the ball and what I thought about catching the ball and just a few ideas like that.”
“He mostly talked about focusing on catching the football. It’s not necessarily about the physical aspects when people say receivers have a lot of drops or can’t catch the ball. It’s that they are not focusing on the right things. That their mind-set is not in the right spot,” Baldwin told the Times. “What I took from him is the techniques he utilized catching the football and being more efficient at it.’’
Baldwin had a breakout season, finishing with 78 receptions and 14 touchdowns.
