Everett City Council approves timber harvest agreement

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The Everett City Council has approved an agreement with state and federal regulators allowing timber harvest on land the city owns but is also the home to federally protected northern spotted owls and marbled murrelets.

The Everett Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1S0x9qQ) that the council approved the agreement Wednesday.

The deal allows the city to cut trees on part of the 3,700-acre tract in exchange for protecting other areas for 50 years.

About 1,000 acres will be protected in the heavily wooded area around Lake Chaplain that is also the city's source of drinking water.
