Oregon woman charged with neglect after baby overdoses on methadone

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A Springfield woman whose infant son nearly died of an overdose on his mother's methadone has been charged with neglect.

The Register-Guard reports that the 33-year-old woman is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on the misdemeanor charge.

According to court documents, the woman initially said her son ingested methadone via her breast milk, but later said an unspecified accident had caused the child to take a direct dose.

Springfield police responded in July after learning that a 3-month-old boy was experiencing a medical emergency. The boy was taken to a hospital and doctors say he survived a "near-death experience" from the overdose.
