Meet one of the kids St. Jude Children's Research Hospital helps every day

MEMPHIS – Heather Frayer knew something was wrong with her son Andrew when he couldn’t keep up with the other kids on the playground.

She sent him to the doctor, and her worst fears were confirmed.

“The MRI came back and he had cancer wrapped around his spinal cord,” she said. “It was the size of an orange growing into his pelvis.”

As part of Q13 Cares’ partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the fight against childhood cancer, Liz Dueweke traveled to St. Jude in Memphis to learn more about the work the facility does for kids in our own area.

In many cases, including the Frayers, St. Jude offers world-class treatment for families that might have trouble affording it otherwise.

“I didn’t know how I was going to afford an ambulance ride,” Frayer said.

St. Jude doesn’t ask for payment. They provide housing, transportation, and help take care of that kids that are in their care. Their goal is to eradicate cancer for kids like Andrew, who’s on his second round of treatment.

St Jude is also raising money for research and treatments through the generous donation of a multi-million dollar home by local builders and sponsors.

A Q13 FOX News crew was given a sneak peek inside the Eastside St Jude Showplace Dream Home will raise money for research and treatments.

Home builder John Buchan homes is building the house and will put it on the market when it is built. The proceeds from that sale go to St. Jude.

The multimillion-dollar home will include four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a fitness room, a theater room and a wine room.

All of the work in the home was donated.

Tours of the home will begin after it goes on the market in January 2016.
