33,000 customers still without power a week after huge storm in Spokane County

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — More than 33,000 customers remain without power in Spokane County after a major wind storm last week damaged the electrical grid in the state's second-largest city. They may not have power until Thanksgiving.

Spokane public schools were closed again on Monday because too many schools lack electricity.

Residents are keeping a wary eye on the weather, as a winter storm was scheduled to hit Spokane on Monday night with snow and wind chills dropping into the single digits.

The Greater Spokane Department of Emergency Management says people in homes without electricity must remain vigilant against carbon monoxide poisoning and hypothermia.

Winds that topped 70 mph struck the Northwest last Tuesday, causing widespread damage and three deaths.
