University Place nets nearly $1 million after hosting US Open

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) — The city of University Place says it netted about $935,000 after hosting the U.S. Open golf tournament at Chambers Bay in June.

The News Tribune reports that most of its gain came from a 5 percent admission tax the city collected on ticket sales. The city also received money from sales tax, its event permit fee and rent.

City expenses included nearly $147,000 in staff-related costs over a two-year period. University Place also spent money on street banners and cleaning up entrances to the city. It also contributed about $50,000 to help Pierce County with security costs.

The U.S. Open was the largest professional sporting event ever held in Pierce County. It was also the largest event ever held in University Place, a city of about 35,000 people near Tacoma.
