Seattle Police say they are increasing security for Sunday's game at CenturyLink

SEATTLE - Security will be tight, when the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals Sunday night. Both the NFL and the Seattle Police Department say after the attacks in Paris, they don’t want to take any chances when it comes to the safety of the fans.

“We’re taking every precaution that we know we should take at this time,” Mayor Ed Murray said at a remembrance event in Seattle this morning.

Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole, who also attended the event, told locals that she has been in constant communication with federal authorities since the Paris attacks.

“We’re getting regular updates in terms of the international picture and the national picture.”

She says there is no immediate threat to the United States, or Seattle specifically. But the department is still increasing patrols throughout the city.

“Any time an incident of this nature takes place, it’s a reminder to all of us that we have to be particularly vigilant,” she says.

Attackers targeted France’s National Soccer Stadium Friday night. The Wall Street Journal says a man with a ticket to the exhibition match was stopped, when security frisked him and found explosives on his vest. They say he detonated those explosives as he backed away from security.

Mayor Murray knows thousands of fans attend each Seahawks game at CenturyLink Field. That’s why he says they’re not taking any chances.

“We’ll be offering extra security tomorrow during the game, and before and after the game,” he says.

The NFL put out a statement today saying they’ve worked with the Department of Homeland Security since 2008, and use metal detectors and multiple layers of perimeter security at all stadiums around the league. Still, they are recommending fans attending games tomorrow leave their bags at home if they can.

Fans we talked to tonight say they understand, and appreciate, the increased security.

“When you least expect it is when another attack is going to happen again,” says Macky Hill. “We should always have our guard up.”

The lights at CenturyLink have been changed to blue, white and red as a show of support to the people of France. The Seahawks will also have a moment of silence before the game to honor the victims of the attack.
