Suspect slams stolen car head-on into Pierce County sheriff's vehicle

TACOMA, Wash. -- A suspect in a stolen truck crashed head-on into a Pierce County sheriff's patrol vehicle before fleeing the scene in the South Hill area.

The News Tribune reports that deputies tried to stop the stolen Ford truck on Wednesday morning on 176th near Gem Heights Drive East.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says the driver took off at speeds reaching 90 mph while heading south on Meridian Ave.

Troyer says the truck ran red lights, eventually turning onto 189th Street East which led to a dead-end. The driver reversed direction and headed straight at the pursuing patrol vehicle, hitting it head on.

One deputy suffered a minor leg injury and the other was not hurt.

The truck kept going and managed to avoid maneuvers to stop it, and even caused another crash at SR 167 and SR 410.

The driver got away and the truck was later found in King County with no one inside.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
