23-year-old engineer poised to be next mayor of Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — A 23-year-old engineer is poised to become the next mayor of the city of Aberdeen on the Washington coast.

Erik Larson appears to be defeating opponent Jack Micheau, an attorney and former Aberdeen City Council member. In early results Tuesday night, Larson led with 72 percent of the vote.

Larson grew up in Aberdeen and returned to the city after graduating from Washington State University. He said Wednesday he wants to improve housing for younger families, revitalize older homes in the area and address flooding issues.

Messages left with Micheau were not immediately returned.

Current mayor Bill Simpson, who was elected in 2008, was edged out in the August primary.

The mayor of Aberdeen manages a $47 million annual budget in the city of about 16,000 people. It's a part-time job.
