13-year-old boy shot on JBLM property dies

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCHORD -- A 13-year-old boy shot in the face last week while trespassing on Joint-Base Lewis-McChord property with two other teens has died, officials say.

The family of Alexander Demello, 13, said the boy died at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital Sunday night.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office will be taking custody of his remains for investigation. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified of his death, officials said.

The 13-year-old was shot in the face Tuesday after he, his 14-year-old brother and the 17-year-old had sneaked into a wooded area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord with a gun and the firearm discharged, police said.

According to the News Tribune of Tacoma, Lakewood police arrested the 17-year-old boy on suspicion of the shooting, for being a felon in possession of a firearm and on a separate warrant for possession of a deadly weapon.

Police offered no details on the boy’s prior felony conviction.
