Coast Guard suspends search in Elliott Bay; State Ferries says no sign that passenger went overboard

SEATTLE -- The Coast Guard suspended their search Wednesday night for a possible man overboard after confirming with ferry staff that no one had gone missing from a sailing between Seattle and Bainbridge Island.

The agency received a call of a person overboard from the ferry Puyallup around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday. That led to a search operation in Elliott Bay, and a suspension of that ferry run for a while.

Washington State Ferries personnel, however,  reviewed their videotapes, finding no sign of a passenger going overboard, and confirmed no items, bike or car had been left aboard the ferry Puyallup on its run from Seattle to Bainbridge Island.

Coast Guard and local response crews, which included the Seattle Harbor Patrol and Fire Boat Leschi, conducted nine searches and covered more than 141 square miles during search efforts, the Coast Guard said.

Officials said there were conflicting reports that it was possible a marine mammal that was spotted.
