Everett officer charged with DUI after rollover crash

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An Everett police lieutenant has been charged with drunken-driving after a rollover crash near Kennewick.

The Daily Herald reports 60-year-old Jimmy Phillips pleaded not guilty in Benton County to driving under the influence Aug. 25 when he crashed his truck with attached 12-foot camper.

Troopers say Phillips took breath-alcohol tests at the scene, one of which registered .207. The legal limit to drive in Washington is .08.

Washington State Patrol officials say Phillips was alone in his truck at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved. He was off-duty at the time.

Phillips has worked with the Everett Police Department for 25 years and currently heads the investigations division.

A police spokesperson says Phillips is taking some time off and that an internal investigation is ongoing.

“Maintaining the public’s trust is critical to our work, and we hold our officers to the highest standards of professionalism, honor and integrity,” Chief Dan Templeman said in a prepared statement. “If the investigation determines that discipline is warranted, we will act accordingly.”
