Trial under way for Bremerton woman charged with arson, murder

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — A Bremerton woman is charged with arson, murder and assault in a house fire that left a man dead.

The Kitsap Sun reports Shelly Arndt is accused of setting a fire in February 2014 that killed her boyfriend's childhood friend Darcy Veeder Jr.

Donny Thomas testified Tuesday that the morning of the fire, his girlfriend woke him, telling him to wake up Veeder. He said he shook his friend's shoulder, but he didn't wake.

Arndt is charged with six counts of felony assault connected to five friends and family who were also in the house at the time. She denies setting the fire.

Arndt was convicted of second-degree arson in 2011. Authorities said she set a fire in a Bremerton home where she lived with Veedeer and his father.
