Report: Thieves using $30 transmitter to break into homes

INDIANAPOLIS -- Police are warning that a simple hack could let thieves into homes -- with the click of a button.

Crooks have recently been spotted using handheld transmitters easily available online to steal garage door codes.

It's a fairly simple process, police said. They point the device toward the garage door, the device steals the code and then jams the frequency. Hackers then come back when homeowners are not around to ransack the house.

The device only costs about $30, police said.

"Anytime a thief can get something and they can get anyone's garage or or home for $30," said Joel Belyew of Precision Door service of Indianapolis. "It's disconcerting."
