Diver dies after getting tangled up in Neah Bay kelp bed

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — The Clallam County Sheriff's Office says a 23-year-old Tacoma man who was diving with friends in Neah Bay died after getting tangled up in a kelp bed.

The victim was snorkeling and free-dive spear fishing with two friends on Sunday west of Neah Bay Harbor's jetty. They were not using scuba gear.

When one of the divers lost sight of his friend, he called the Coast Guard and they began a search.

One of the divers found the missing man caught in the kelp in about 25 feet of water. The diver cut him free and he was picked up by a rescue boat.

The diver was pronounced dead at the Neah Bay Health Clinic.

His name was withheld until his family could be notified.
