Federal judge rules trial of father of Marysville high school shooter to stay in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal judge has denied a request to move the trial of the father of the teenager who fatally shot four of his friends in a high school cafeteria last fall.

U.S. District Judge James Robart said Wednesday that the trial of Raymond Fryberg, charged with illegally possessing the gun his son Jaylen Fryberg used in the shooting, will start Monday in Seattle, as planned.

But Robart scolded the lawyers on both sides for what he described as "engaging in press warfare" by speaking with reporters or sending out press releases.

The judge says they can address any concerns about pre-trial publicity and juror prejudice with a juror questionnaire.

He says he'll also be sure that jurors know the distinction between the Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting and the charges against Fryberg.
